Ratios that measure ongoing cash flow (emergency reserves, debt payments, expenses, savings rate, disability coverage) are compared against your total monthly income (earned + passive). Ratios that measure long-term position (net worth relative to income, life insurance coverage) are compared against your annual earned income, in line with common financial-planning benchmarks. Loan-to-value and debt-to-asset checks compare debt directly to the value of what it's attached to.
